Personal Statement
When I first selected “Journalism 1” as my freshman year elective, it was mostly out of default. My friend had suggested the course and, without fully grasping all of my options, I added it to my schedule. At the time, I held so many untethered passions. I loved to write, but beyond a three-pronged essay I struggled to formulate paragraphs. I strived to initiate service, but translating that passion in high school was a challenge. And, most of all, I longed to advocate for underrepresented voices, leaving lasting impressions after I graduated. Still, I wasn’t quite sure what journalism was, and how it could help me achieve my goals.
After four years in the newsroom, now assuming the role of Co-Editor-in-Chief, my world has irrevocably changed for the better. Journalism has fused my passions into one cohesive interest. Over 55 projects, three print editions, and countless hours editing later, I’ve found it to be the most powerful tool a student can yield—now more than ever.
My turning point was the 2022 JEA fall convention in St. Louis. When I was in class completing practice articles and learning about press laws, it was hard to grasp the magnitude of student journalism. But as soon as I stepped into a new conference room, surrounded by hundreds of passionate students, teachers, and professionals, I realized the global role it played. Hearing from members of the Boston Globe Spotlight team, students who risked their lives to cover college protests, and teachers who found innovative ways to bring journalism to their schools made me even more excited to start reporting.
Then, as a budget crisis loomed over my school during my sophomore year, I helped cover school committee meetings, break down proposals, and disseminate the information in digestible forms for my community. Our publication engaged a larger level of local democracy and became a key advocate for our school systems and the groups that were threatened by a deficit. But what I found more compelling was the way we were able to elevate student voices in a time of crisis, showcasing the passion and dedication that went into their programs. The ability to allow these groups to share their stories was more rewarding to me than any budget report.
With each new article, I grounded my community in truth and perspective. I realized quickly that my goals were achievable through journalism, so I continued to shed light on important issues. Taking a particular interest in feature writing, I was able to highlight underrepresented communities and channel my passion for social justice. As I stirred conversations around Indigenous Peoples’ Day, accessible housing for individuals with IDDs, and even got students to join a mission trip to Guatemala, I realized that articles can often speak for themselves. The subject’s stories illuminated issues or triumphs that my community had yet to see. My writing was able to make just as grand an impact as any other act of service, and this is what drove me to continue reporting.
In each article, I’ve dedicated myself to representing a complete picture of my community. Through every interview, email, and interaction I learn a little bit more about someone; I understand a little more of the truth. I love that this course has given me the power to give others a voice, while also emboldening me to use my own.
If I hadn’t taken a leap of faith and blindly signed up for Journalism 1, I would have never realized how versatile the subject can be. It is a voice for those who are silenced and a platform for those who deserve celebration. Good journalism is a universal equalizer, distilling truth at the hands of the student. It’s a lot of pressure to uphold such standards, but the kind that pushes you into something great.
Journalism has allowed me to see my town and school through a different lens, one that is both critical and celebratory. My reporting has facilitated these connections of perspective, enabling more open discussions. Whether it be small moments of gentle curiosity or large-scale recognition, I write to give all voices the platform they deserve.
